About Us

The predecessor of our institute was the Institute of Social Anthropology, which was divided into the Institute of Sociology and the Institute of Anthropology in 1998. 
Currently, the Institute of Sociology @NTHU offers MA and Ph.D. programs.

Our goals:
1.    to cultivate future sociologists who possess profound analytical and critical abilities to explore the transformation of Taiwanese society
2.    to nurture future social backbone with sociological perspectives to make contribution in various fields and sectors in our society.

MA program: Group A (General Sociology)

Group A (General Sociology)
offers introductory and specialized courses in the following subfields of sociology: 

  • Cultural Sociology
  • Economic Sociology
  • Gender Sociology
  • Sociology of Science, Technology and Medicine
  • Political Sociology. 

The main principles of course design are as follows:
1.    Deepening disciplinary foundational training.
2.    Cultivating local concerns and problem awareness.
3.    Fostering historical consciousness.
4.    Familiarizing students with the ‘second societies’ outside Taiwan
with comparative perspectives.
5.    Integrating academic concerns with lives.

MA program: Group B (China Studies Program)

Group B (China Studies Program)
was established in the spring of 2003 in cooperation with the Academia Sinica.

Four issues as our research focus: 
1. Analyses of China’s transition with special emphasis on emerging social forces, social organizations, and social contentions. 
2. Analyses of the cross-strait social and economic exchanges, particularly focusing on the Taiwanese business community in China. 
3. Studies of China’s offshore influence and sharp power, particularly focusing on “China factor in Taiwan”. 
4. Comparative analysis of China’s political development and transition.

Ph.D program of Sociology

Ph.D program of Sociology:

In August 2004, our institute established the doctoral program, focusing on cultivating PhD students’ professional academic research and teaching abilities. Through rigorous training in solid theories and diverse research methods, along with strict doctoral qualification examinations and dissertation research, we support students in conducting various types of research. Graduates of our institute’s doctoral program possess professional capabilities in at least two subfields of sociology and the ability to conduct independent research.
