演講簡介|In 2015, the news was filled with reports on dehydrated and starving Rohingya abandoned in the Andaman Sea. I engage with this crisis as a point of departure to lead into a critical investigation of the im-moral economy of the clandestine migration industry in Asia. Based on ethnographic fieldwork with Rohingya, I ask: Where do the contested boundaries between 'help' and 'exploitation', between merit making and money making, lie in facilitating Rohingya's escape from persecution? I will demonstrate how understanding the im-moral economy of clandestine migration through their and their brokers' perspectives disrupts state-defined ideas of territory, border, and human trafficking.
