學術傳記

        我的社會學想像來自於農村的成長背景與在都市求學過程的衝擊,所以我選擇放棄外交系,進入社會學,並以鄉村社會學為主修,因為我想知道為什麼作農的人們過得如此辛苦,寄望社會學給我答案。返國後,學術界的實況和我的浪漫想像相去甚遠。於是開始我的社會學實作學習: 性別研究 – 知識立基於弱勢位置,累積於生命經驗。

        我過去的性別研究集中於兩個題目:(1)台灣經濟發展過程中,女性參與勞動身分的改變;(2) 台灣婦女參政、政治身分的變遷與台灣民主化的關係。於此兩個議題中,略有成果。除了探討台灣經濟發展(1966-1988年),婦女就業型態與勞動市場性別隔離之論文廣被引用外,關於台灣婦女政治參與的發展(1952-1996年)和影響因素,至今仍是台灣最主要的研究和唯一英文專書;近期研究則較集中於台灣民主化的政治轉型,對婦女公民權/公民身分及婦女運動作為女性政治代理人的意義。目前所提供的READINGS以這部分為主。

        目前進行的中國研究計畫則屬起步,源自於對全球化下台灣未來發展的關懷,以91-93年期間擔任清華大學「當代中國研究中心」的籌備與主任工作,並有機會赴中國參訪為契機。此研究計畫建立在過去對台灣婦女勞動與經濟發展的研究基礎,延伸到對台商頭家娘、臺幹等台灣跨國女性勞動者,探究國際資本累積過程對她們不同層面的勞動關係的影響,藉此釐清性/情慾政治與經濟、國族之複雜關聯與特殊性。此子計畫的研究可說是從性別的觀點,試圖揭示全球化與中國市場社會形成過程中,台灣女性(頭家娘)可以發揮的能動性;同時凸顯全球化及市場轉型對不同位置(階級、國族、年齡)的女性可能造成的不同效果。
